Sphero Bolts can be used in KS1, 2 and 3 but we recomend focussing their use in KS2 and 3 where you'll get the most out of them.

Sphero Bolts come in a large blue charging case as a set of 15.

Bluetooth enabled devices such as iPads or Chromebooks are needed to control these devices.

Your younger pupils will likely begin by experiemnting with the drive feature that allows the Bolt to be controlled much like a remote control car and will help them to understand how to aim their bolt before they begin and then to control their speed.

After this is draw. Pupils can draw shapes and letters on their iPad screen and have their bolt follow this pattern. This is a great way to introduce the concept of debugging (tweaking their drawing) until the bolt does what they had planned.

Pupils will then move on to using a drag and drop block based system, allowing them to design more complex algorithms.  In KS3 they may also begin to explore text based coding.

We love how robust Sphero Bolt is, when protected with its silicone case, Bolt can race across the school hall, be placed into paint trays to create art trails and can even be dropped into water - perhaps to propel a raft designed by your pupils. It really is an amazing cross curricular tool.
